Chicago State University offers a nursing program that equips students to competently fulfill various nursing duties and to effectively work in many different areas of nursing. The program emphasizes developing strong relationships between the instructors and the students. The courses will cover therapeutic nursing intervention methods, researching evaluation techniques, applying biophysical and behavior science knowledge to practical situations, practicing the skills on official equipment and participating in the medical community. To gain admission into Chicago State's nursing program, all applicants must be at least college sophomores, pass a nursing entrance exam, submit a letter of intent along with three letters of recommendations and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) is connected to seven colleges located throughout the Chicagoland area, including Daley, Harold Washington College, Kennedy-King College, Malcolm X College, Olive-Harvey College, Wright College and Truman College. CCC provides nursing programs at many of these campus locations. However, because of the large number of applicants for each semester and the limited number of accepted students, admission to the program is very competitive, and only applicants with superior credentials can be accepted.
All applicants must apply to the CCC admissions office by completing an online application that includes their official transcript, academic history and COMPASS reading assessment score. The minimum GPA for applicants is 2.5, and the COMPASS score must be at least a 90. Furthermore, prospective students must meet prerequisite requirements with at least a C in biology 121, at least a B in chemistry 121, a C or better in chemistry 201 and a C or better in math 118.
Located just outside of Chicago in Grayslake, the College of Lake County offers an associates degree program in nursing. CLC provides a tough screening process to decide which applicants may enroll into the program. All applicants must provide a transcript for their previous high school and college records, demonstrate proficient language and mathematics skills on CLC entrance tests and participate in a nursing information meeting. Furthermore, prospective students must show documentation that they have successfully completed the prerequisite chemistry, biology, physiology and anatomy courses with at least a C and that they possess a cumulative GPA of at least 2.
DePaul University is a Catholic university in Chicago with a nursing program that enhances the scientific knowledge of students, improves their nursing technical skills and prepares them to achieve successful careers in various health care settings. The courses trains students to obtain employment as professional nurses who design health care programs and as advanced practical nurses who take quality care of patients. In addition to a wide range of certificate programs, DePaul also provides nursing degree programs in advanced practice family nursing, advanced practice anesthesia and master's entry to nursing practice.
