Minnesota Film Schools

Minnesota may not be the first state that comes to mind when one thinks of movie making, but it does have strong ties to the film industry. Minnesota has hosted the filming of "Fargo," "Grumpy Old Men" and "Mallrats," along with other wide-release features. Talented directors such as Joel and Ethan Coen and George Roy Hill are Minnesota natives. Since 1983, the Minnesota Film and TV Board has been promoting and facilitating film production throughout the state, providing information on locations, equipment and local talent. Training is also available in Minnesota: aspiring filmmakers can hone their skills and attain film degrees at a number of Minnesota schools.
  1. Minneapolis College of Art and Design

    • Minneapolis College of Art and Design awards a Bachelor of Fine Arts to its graduates in its filmmaking program. Requirements for the degree include classes in directing, lighting and screenwriting. MCAD also offers graduate studies in filmmaking, bestowing a Master of Fine Arts degree upon completion.
