Illinois Theological Schools

Theology is the study of religious thought and belief. Illinois is home to several theological schools and seminaries. Most of the schools are located in Chicago, Lombard or Champaign. Whether Jewish, Christian or Islamic, the theological schools in Illinois champion scholarship, spirituality and the cultural values associated with each system of faith.
  1. Chicago Theological Seminary

    • Chicago Theological Seminary (CTS) offers a variety of degree programs for individuals who already hold a degree in theology or divinity. Programs include a master's and doctorate of ministry in preaching. In conjunction with the University of Chicago, CTS also offers a dual-degree master's program in social work and divinity. CTS is home to several theological centers and special programs, including the LGBTQ Religious Studies Center at Chicago Theological Seminary and the Institute for Spirituality and Wellness, in which students can participate. Financial aid is available through grants and scholarships. Students may also apply federal student loans to their tuition costs.

    Hebrew Theological College

    • Hebrew Theological College promotes and fosters scholarship in Orthodox Judaism. The school offers two programs of study: the Beis Midrash program and the Billstein Institute, through which women can earn a bachelor's degree in any major in addition to a major in Jewish studies. The college also hosts the Fasman Yeshiva High School, a college preparatory school that promotes spiritual life in Judaism.

    American Islamic College

    • American Islamic College offers non-credit and non-degree courses in Arabic, Turkish, Islamic mysticism and Quranic studies. Courses are also offered in calligraphy, history of Christian-Islamic relations, and Islamic art and architecture. A student residence hall is available. The college does not currently offer degrees.

    Urbana Theological Seminary

    • Urbana Theological Seminary, in Champaign, seeks to nurture students for roles in Christian ministry. A master's in divinity and master of arts in religion are the only degrees offered. A graduate certificate is also available in Christian studies. Courses include biblical studies, Christian history and thought, and practical ministry.
