The only university in the state of Illinois to offer a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is one of 28 schools in the United States to offer a DVM program. The College Of Veterinary Medicine accepted its first class in 1948 and currently enrolls 120 first-year veterinary students each fall.

Also located in Champaign, Parkland College offers a two-year Associate of Applied Science program to prepare students to become a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT). Parkand's Veterinary Technology program is fully accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association's CVTEA.

Located near Chicago, Joliet Junior College offers a two-year program AAS for prospective CVTs. The Veterinary Medical Technology program is currently designed for 48 students. Students who complete the VMT program are eligible to write the National Examination for Registered Veterinary Technicians for licensure in Illinois. The VMT program is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and is approved by the state of Illinois.
