Northern College has a four-semester veterinary technician diploma program recognized by the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians (OAVT) and the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association. The course provides a rounded training for all aspects of clinic work including practical animal examination, preventative and emergency practices plus business and administrative-related study. A rabies vaccine series and titre is required prior to start of the program. Adult students over age 19 who do not have a diploma or GED may gain admission to the program after passing an academic skills entrance exam. Students are eligible to sit for the OAVT exam following successful completion of the course.

According to the Oulton College website, western provinces have a short supply of veterinary technicians, resulting in a career that's in high demand with a starting salary between $25,000 and $30,000 per year. Graduates in 2008 and 2009 had a 91 percent job placement success rate. The veterinary technician program is 20 months long with full-time attendance and accredited by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA). A rabies and tetanus vaccination is required for course enrollment. Supplies and uniforms are at an additional cost above the tuition fee. An two-week 80-hour internship at Atlantic Veterinary College is an optional course component. Graduates are eligible to sit for the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) administered by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB).

The two-year veterinary technician curriculum at St. Clair College is accredited by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association and the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians. Additionally, the school's teaching hospital and adjoining facilities are accredited and approved by the College of Veterinarians of Ontario and the Canadian Council on Animal Care. Admission preference is given to Ontario residents, followed by residents of other Canadian provinces followed by U.S. and international applicants. Senior-level math, English, biology and chemistry are admission criterion.
