Caribbean Vet Schools

Even though vet schools in the Caribbean are not accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association's Council on Education (AVMA/COE), students who receive their doctorates in veterinary medicine from these schools may practice in the United States if they become certified by the Educational Committee of Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG). This requires passing the North American Veterinary Licensure Examination (NAVLE) and the ECFVG's Clinical Proficiency Examination (CPE).
  1. Ross University

    • Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM) offers educational programs leading to a DVM degree. Founded in 1982, the school has granted DVMs to 2,400 students. The program lasts seven semesters of pre-clinical curriculum, but the final year of clinical training must be conducted at one of Ross University's 22 affiliated veterinary schools in the United States. As of August 2010, the university is seeking accreditation by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council. The schools passage rate of the North American Veterinary Licensing Exam (NAVLE), required to practice veterinary medicine in the U.S., was 94% in the 2009-2010 class, up from 88% in the 2005-2006 year.

    • St. George's University School of Veterinary Medicine offers both a four-year DVM program and a three-year pre-veterinary medicine program. Of the individuals enrolled in the DVM program, approximately 87% were U.S. citizens for the 2009-2010 academic year. Applicants to the DVM program must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited university and have completed coursework in basic math and English courses and a variety of science coursework. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores must also be submitted. The fourth year of the program, consisting of 48 weeks of clinical training, is completed at one of the 23 schools in U.S. affiliated veterinary medical schools.
