The Cosumnes River College offers an Associate's of Arts degree and certificates in accounting, accounting clerk, advanced accounting and taxation certificate in accounting. The associate program includes general education classes in addition to the accounting emphasis classes. The Associate's degree requires 35 credits in accounting courses and additional courses to total at least 60 credits. This option can usually be completed in two years with full-time attendance. Certificates range from 19 to 35 credit requirements and can be completed in as little one semester to one year.
At the Sacramento City College, students can earn an Associate's of Science degree in accounting or a certificate of achievement. Both are suitable for employment in an entry-level position as an accountant, clerk or bookkeeper in either the private or public sector. Associate's degrees have classes in management, economics, computer science as well as general accounting courses. The college also offers an advanced level certificate of achievement that allows students to take on more challenging positions within various companies.
MTI College is a private institution that offers an accounting technician diploma program. The program can be completed in about 36 weeks on campus. The goal of the college is to produce graduates able to take on entry level accounting positions within the community. Students learn skills such as accounting law, computer science and the ability to work independently. After the completion of this program, students are eligible to continue to year two of the Associate of Applied Science in business administration at MTI.
The College of Business Administration located at Sacramento State offers a Master of Science in accountancy. This program comes out of the need for graduate-level education for the accounting profession. As of early 2011, the program is still in the stages of receiving full accreditation. As a program designed for busy professionals, this is an online program and can be completed in 18 months. Courses are six weeks long and "meet" once a week online using the educational platform provided by the college. Students have access to recorded lectures, lecture notes, message boards, assessments and relevant material links as the instructor posts it. Students that choose this program to further their education will be able to hold their current job as they complete the program since there is not a set class schedule to attend.
