The Roman Catholic Church founded the College of St. Elizabeth in 1899 as a post-secondary school for women in Morristown, New Jersey, approximately 40 miles from New York City. The school is home to nearly 1,200 undergraduate and graduate students and offers both a traditional baccalaureate degree in nursing as well as a bachelor's degree-completion program designed for nurses who hold a registered nursing license but have only an associate degree in the field. Among the courses required for the traditional program are ethics, anatomy, community health, family medicine, nursing research and holistic health assessment. The college offers a master of science in nursing degree as well. Both undergraduate and graduate students can participate in international clinical placements and medical missions work.

Established in 1868, Bloomfield College is a private institution affiliated with the Presbyterian Church and home to more than 2,000 students. Named for the suburban community where its 12-acre campus is situated, the college is approximately 15 miles from New York City. The Frances McLaughlin Division of Nursing at the college offers both a traditional baccalaureate and a degree-completion bachelor's for licensed registered nurses. Entry-level, traditional classes complete courses in computer literacy, economics, academic writing, microbiology, inorganic and organic chemistry, pharmacology, psychiatric nursing, obstetrics, growth and development, pediatrics, psychology, sociology and statistics. All nursing students must complete a senior research project or culminating thesis paper in order to graduate.

In 2010, U.S. News and World Report ranked Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey at New Brunswick, sixty-sixth among all universities in the United States. The public college is home to more than 36,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The traditional baccalaureate degree in nursing offered at the school involves classes in anatomy, sociology, microbiology, statistics, nutrition, family health, pediatrics and gerontology. The college also offers accelerated baccalaureate degree programs for students who have a bachelor's degree in another field. For registered nurses who hold associate degrees, the college offers an accelerated bachelor and master's degree program, and for entry-level students a combined baccalaureate and doctoral course of study is offered. Traditional master's and doctoral programs in nursing are also featured.
