A public institution, the University of New Mexico's 769-acre campus in Albuquerque is home to more than 25,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Students wishing to pursue the college's Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program spend two years completing general education requirements and prerequisites in mathematics, science and humanities before applying for admission to the professional phase of the program. This second phase lasts for two years and includes clinical rotations in Albuquerque-area medical facilities. The school also offers accelerated baccalaureate nursing degrees for students who already have a bachelor's degree in another field or who have a registered nursing license but only an associate's degree in nursing. Master's and doctorate programs in nursing are also offered. Eligible students can receive federal and state financial aid, scholarships or work-study placements. New Mexico residents receive discounted tuition rates.

ITT Technical Institute is a private, for-profit institution with locations throughout the United States, including a campus in Albuquerque. The school offers an Associate of Science in Nursing degree program for those wanting to become a registered nurse. Around 15 to 30 students are admitted to the two-year program annually. The college offers an Associate of Science in Nursing program that boasts a 100-percent job placement rate among its graduates. The school also grants a certificate for licensing in practical nursing, which takes one year to complete and requires a 15-week nurse assisting program.
