Founded in 1963, the University of Central Florida is an Orlando-based college with more than 50,200 undergraduate and graduate students. The school offers a Bachelor of Science degree in art education. Required courses for the program include art history, two and three-dimensional design, drawing, printmaking, painting, computer art, photography, learning theory, teaching strategies and art for special needs students. The program prepares students to teach art both at the elementary and secondary levels. Students complete one part-time internship and a full-time student-teaching placement prior to graduation. The United Methodist Church founded Florida Southern College in 1885 in Lakeland, a community 55 miles from Orlando (about one hour away by automobile). Home to more than 1,800 undergraduate and graduate students, the college received the ninth-place ranking among all baccalaureate colleges in the southern United States from "U.S. News and World Report" in 2010. The college grants both a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts degree in art education. The primary difference between the two is that the latter program requires students to complete coursework in foreign languages and philosophy. Both programs involve coursework in design, drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, human development, classroom management, educational tests and teaching English to non-native speakers. A student teaching internship is required for graduation for both degrees. Graduates are qualified to teach kindergarten through 12th grade. Master's degrees in education and teaching are also awarded.
