Pennsylvania Area Colleges

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is one of the U.S.'s northeastern states, with more than 100 institutions of higher education as of February, 2011. Sixty of them are classified as colleges, ranging from community colleges to medical schools. According to a 2009 report by the National Center for Education Statistics, about 26 percent of Pennsylvania's population has a degree from such institutions.
  1. Bucks County Community College

    • Bucks County Community College is one of the 15 two-year institutions of higher education in the state. It was founded in 1964, with the main purpose of serving the residents of Bucks County. Split into six academic departments, BCCC offers certificates and associate degrees in subject areas such as cinema/video production, fine woodworking, phlebotomy, women's studies, computer networking technology and nanofabrication technology.

    DuBois Business College

    • Named after its location northeast of Pittsburgh, DuBois Business College, founded in 1885, is one of the oldest private business schools in the country. As of February, 2011, it offers nine associate degrees and three diploma programs, which include clinical medical assistant, entertainment production business, accounting assistant and computer systems support technician. In addition to the main campus in DuBois, DBC has two additional locations in Huntingdon County and Oil City.

    Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine & School of Pharmacy

    • The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine & School of Pharmacy is named after its location in the northwestern Pennsylvania city of Erie, with a satellite campus at Bradenton, Florida. As its name also suggests, the graduate college focuses on providing doctor of osteopathic medicine and doctor of pharmacy degrees. LECOM also offers two master's degrees, in medical education and biomedical sciences.

    Swarthmore College

    • Founded in 1864 by a Quakers committee, Swarthmore College is a small private liberal arts college tucked in the southwestern Pennsylvania borough of Swarthmore. Its 32 undergraduate programs include Islamic studies, modern languages and literatures, peace and conflict studies, and theater. The college has about 1,500 enrolled students as of February, 2011.
