Community Colleges in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is home to the location in which the Declaration of Independence was signed, the first computer and the Philly cheese steak. It also has 22 community college campus locations spread throughout the state, providing students the opportunity to earn associate degrees, certificates, diplomas and career training. From 2005 to 2006, four out of every nine awards were earned in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields.

    • As the largest public institution of higher education in the city, the Community College of Philadelphia offers associate degrees, certificates and career skills-building courses. It provides flexible day, evening and weekend class scheduling in addition to online and hybrid (on campus and online) course options. Approximately 79 percent of students transfer to a four-year college to continue their education. The college is an asset to Philadelphia, as more than 90 percent of its graduates seek employment in the area. The institution maintains a diverse campus, as approximately 73 percent of the population represent minorities. In fact, the school was ranked seventh in the number of associate degrees awarded to African-American students by U.S. News and World Report.

    Butler County Community College

    • Butler County Community College's main campus is located in Butler, Pennsylvania and offers 63 associate degrees centered on disciplines in nursing, allied health, business, liberal arts and technology. The school maintains a focus on personal student attention by allowing a maximum of 20 students per classroom. The college provides flexible class schedules with 99 online course options in addition to day, evening and weekend classes. The campus is the home of The Succop Theater, which holds student performances, and The Mary Hulton Phillips Gallery, which houses student art exhibits.

    Luzerne County Community College

    • With 11 campuses across northeastern Pennsylvania, Luzerne County Community College was rated from "good" to "excellent" by 95 percent of its graduating students. Technology is offered at the school with over 900 computers located among 40 labs. Over 50 percent of the college's classrooms contain Smart Classrooms, allowing instructors to teach with advanced equipment. The college offers more than 100 academic, career and technical training programs with unique programs in aviation, music recording technology, motor sports and fire science technology. Luzerne County Community College is also the largest college in northeastern Pennsylvania, attracting students of many ages and backgrounds.
