Hampton Community Colleges

Hampton, Virginia, is located just 11 minutes from Newport News and 40 minutes from Virginia Beach.     • Thomas Nelson Community College, located on Thomas Nelson Drive, offers students two-year degrees, certificates and continuing-education credits. Students who wish to graduate from a four-year institute can take transfer courses as part of the associate of arts and associate of sciences programs. Technical degrees available through the college include associate of applied arts and associate of applied science. Certificate courses include air conditioning, automotive technology, communication design and early childhood development assistant. Pre-nursing and licensed practical nurse to registered nurse programs are available.

    • Riverside School of Health, located on Main Street in Newport News, provides career training at the school of nursing in practical nursing, radiologic technology and surgical technology. Fast-track programs include LPN to RN and advanced imaging. Prerequisites vary for each course of study, but common requirements include high school diploma or GED certificate, satisfactory interview and an essay. Classes are transferable to Eastern Shore Community College for admission into the associate's degree program for radiologic technicians. Riverside School of Health offers flexible class schedules, including nights and weekends. Financial aid opportunities include scholarships, loans and grants.

    Tidewater Community College

    • Tidewater Community College has three campuses servicing the Hampton area. Degree programs include business, languages, mathematics, science, technology, social sciences and engineering. More than 150 degrees and certificates are available. Tidewater Community College offers workforce development classes designed to enhance work skills. The admissions process includes meeting eligibility requirements, applying, registering for classes and paying tuition. Online classes differ from traditional on-campus classes. Tidewater Community College accepts financial aid in the form of loans, scholarships and grants.

    Centura College

    • Centura College is a two-year career school with a campus in Newport News, Virginia, only 11 miles from Hampton. Other campuses are located in Virginia, Florida and South Carolina. Academic programs are earned from schools of health education, business and computers. Students earn degrees as an HVAC technician, paralegal and network technician. Not all courses are available at every campus, so students are encouraged to contact the local Newport News campus for information on current programs. Online courses offered by Centura College may differ from campus courses. Online applications are not available for the college. Students must contact the admissions office for information on applications and financial aid.
