A liberal arts college for the deaf, Gallaudet University offers undergraduate and graduate programs that include business administration, computer science, criminology, education, foreign languages, psychology, social work and theater arts. Gallaudet also offers majors in American Sign Language, or ASL, deaf studies and interpretation. Some hearing students attend Gallaudet University, particularly those majoring in interpretation, but the majority of students are hearing impaired and ASL is the primary language used.

Part of the Rochester Institute of Technology, the National Technical Institute for the Deaf offers undergraduate and graduate programs including accounting, business administration, civil engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, health systems administration, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering and telecommunications. NTID also offers a degree in ASL-to-English interpretation and a certificate program in deaf studies. Students must be fluent in American Sign Language.
