The University of Texas' athletic training program is rated the top program of its kind by Education-portal.com. Students are offered a four-year degree in athletic training. The major, known as the Athletic Training Program, prepares students to become trainers in all levels of sport, from high school to the professional levels. The program includes one year of direct observation. When the students pass the preathletic training prerequisites, they enter into the ATEP program for three years. In the ATEP, students are assigned a clinical instructor who oversees the student's coursework. Students receive hands-on experience and directly work with patients. The ATEP features general classes in Texas history, mathematics and natural science. Beyond the general curriculum, students take a variety of coursework including kiniseiology, conditioning, introduction to athletic training and physiology among others. When the program is completed, students are prepared to take the state athletic training licensing exam.

The athletic training major falls under the school's Department of Exercise and Sports Science Department. Students learn theoretical applications and preparations for athletes and the physically active. Students are educated to prepare for professional certification and future career opportunities. Kinesiology, sports physiology, anatomy and athletic training techniques are some of the courses offered.

Education-portal.com rates Cal State-Long Beach University as the third-best athletic training program in the U.S. The athletic training program consists of 120 credits designed for students who want careers in prevention, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Cal State has two training options for students. Students can seek a career in athletic training and sit for the National Athletic Trainer's Associating exam. Or students can take the athletic training program as a step to an advanced health care postgraduate program. Students take two years of athletic training and perform two years of clinical hands-on education. Students in the program also take courses such as development and therapeutic exercise, athletic training, motor development and resistance training relative to fitness.
