RNs who are seeking to progress into positions such as nurse practitioner or nurse educator can complete a master of science degree, while Ph.D. programs train nurse administrators and nursing scholars. Mississippi nursing programs prepare graduates for state licensure at entry and advanced levels.

    • The University of Mississippi Medical Center offers nursing programs at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral level. Undergraduate degree tracks are available for college students and college graduates who are pursing nursing as a second career. Registered nurses who hold an associate's degree can enroll in a program that earns them a master's degree in nursing; the RN-MSN program can be completed in seven to nine semesters, allowing RNs to balance school with work commitments. A traditional master's track is also available for nurses who hold a bachelor's degree. At the graduate level, nurses train for careers as nurse practitioners, educators or administrators. Doctoral degree candidates can earn a doctor of nursing practice degree that trains them to develop health care programs. The PhD program is research-focused.

    University of Southern Mississippi

    • The University of Southern Mississippi notes on its website that its nursing programs are suitable for entry-level and advanced nurses, as well as aspiring nurse administrators, researchers and educators. The bachelor's degree is awarded to students who complete core liberal arts courses in addition to nursing courses that cover topics such as pharmacology, nursing research and mental health nursing. USM is moving its master's nursing program online, and students in the program can select from majors including family nursing and psychiatric nurse practitioner. Doctoral level students can select from clinical or research tracks.

    Alcorn State University

    • Since its inception in 1977, the nursing program has expanded its offerings from an associate's degree to bachelor's and master's degrees. The associate's program prepares graduates for entry-level positions as registered nurses and offers a fast track option for LPNs (licensed practical nurses). The bachelor's degree offers two tracks, one of which can be completed online. Graduate students train for careers as nurse educators or family nurse practitioners. Master's degrees can be completed on a part-time basis.
