Kansas Nursing Schools

Kansas is the home of some nationally-ranked nursing programs. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics is projecting sustained growth of the job market for the field of nursing through 2018. It is expected that the field will grow by more than 20 percent by then. Obtaining your degree from a nationally-ranked or fully accredited school of nursing may give you an advantage over the rest of the field in this ever-growing profession.

    • The University of Kansas (KU) School of Nursing is one of the top-rated nursing programs, according to the most recent U.S. News & World Report rankings for the nursing profession, published in 2007. Among the other schools of nursing nationwide, U.S. News ranked the KU program No. 40. The School of Nursing at KU was founded in 1906 and has since grown to become a nationally renowned program offering a wide array of degree options for undergraduate and graduate students.

      Undergraduate degree programs include the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and variants of the program offered in other formats such as the online program for registered nurses with associate's degrees wanting to complete their education. Graduate degrees at Kansas include the Master of Science (MSN), Doctor of Nursing Practice and the PhD. There are a number of different areas of specialization within the MSN program: clinical nurse specialist, public health nursing, nurse anesthesia, clinical research management, organizational leadership, health care informatics, nurse practitioner and midwifery. There are also numerous post-master's degree certificates available.

    Wichita State University

    • The second highest rated school of nursing in Kansas, according to U.S. News & World Report, is at Wichita State University (WSU). U.S. News ranked the Wichita State program No. 167 among all programs nationwide. Like the KU program, the WSU program offers a wide variety of degree options that include the traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree for traditional full-time undergraduate students and an accelerated program for registered nurses and traditional students. Graduate degrees at WSU's School of Nursing include both the Master of Science in Nursing and the Doctor of Nursing Practice. Areas of specialization include clinical nurse specialist, nurse practitioner, nurse midwifery, nursing and health care administration and a joint-degree program that allows students to obtain both the MSN degree and a Master in Business Administration.

    Fort Hays State University

    • Although not nationally ranked like KU and WSU, Fort Hays State University's (FHSU) Department of Nursing offers students in Kansas a third nursing education option. FHSU offers a wide array of degree options for nursing students. Undergraduate programs include the traditional Bachelor of Science degree along with the accelerated program for registered nurses. A minor in gerontology is also offered. At the graduate level, FHSU offers a Master of Science degree with concentrations in the areas of nursing administration, nursing education and family nurse practitioner. A Professional Science Master's degree (PSM) is also offered in the field of health care administration.
