The nursing school at Atlanta's Emory University was founded in 1905. In 1968, the university named the school the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing to honor the wife of Robert Woodruff, a former Coca-Cola president and Emory University philanthropist. The school offers a variety of undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs leading to bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. In 2007, "U.S. News and World Report" ranked the Woodruff School of Nursing No. 26 among the nation's nursing schools.

The Georgia Baptist College of Nursing at Mercer University in Atlanta offers students undergraduate degrees, graduate degrees and certificate programs in nursing. The undergraduate program offers two study tracks: bachelor of science in nursing pre-licensure and registered nurse-bachelor of science in nursing advanced. The school's graduate education consists of a master's degree program with two areas of study: nursing education and acute and critical care clinical nursing. Students can also choose a dual master program that combines both areas. The program also includes a doctorate in nursing. The nurse educator certificate program requires courses in educational theory and curriculum design, instructional and evaluation strategies and teaching practicum and role development for the nurse educator.

Atlanta Technical College has a practical nursing diploma program that requires at least 95 quarter-hour credits. The program typically takes four quarters to complete. Courses include nutrition and diet therapy, introduction to health care, medical terminology for allied health science and drug calculation and administration. Students must maintain a minimum 2.5 grade-point average. In 2007, "Washington Monthly" magazine ranked Atlanta Technical College the best community college in the country.
