Grambling State University offers a traditional bachelor's degree program for aspiring nurses, as well as a degree completion program for registered nurses. Graduate nursing programs prepare graduates for careers as family nurse practitioners or nurse educators. Bachelor's degree candidates complete courses in medical-surgical nursing, mental health nursing and child nursing as well as nursing management and research. At the master's level, students take courses that cover topics such as advanced health management, family dynamics and rural health issues. Graduate students complete either a research project or thesis; students in the nurse educator choose from either a child or adult focus for their clinical work.

Louisiana State University offers several nursing programs via its Health Sciences center. Registered nurses can apply to the RN-to-BSN or RN-to-MN tracks. First-year students are eligible to apply to the bachelor of science in nursing program. At the graduate level, students can select from several master's-level specialties, such as nurse practitioner or nurse anesthetist. The doctorate program in nursing science is research-focused and candidates submit a dissertation at the end of the program. Individuals who hold bachelor's degrees in non-nursing fields and want to become nurses can apply to LSU's Career Alternative RN Education, or CARE, program.
