The most prominent nursing school in the state of Virginia, according to U.S. News & World Report rankings, is located at the University of Virginia (UVA). The university has extensive nursing programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. UVA offers the Bachelor of Science in Nursing for traditional students and a bridge program that allows registered nurses to complete their bachelor's degree. The university also offers a master's degree for students with a bachelor's degree in the field and a direct-entry Master of Science in Nursing program for students with bachelor's degrees outside of the nursing field. In addition to these programs, the school offers a joint M.S.N./M.B.A. program and both a Ph.D. and a doctor of nursing practice (D.N.P.) options.

In addition to the traditional Bachelor of Science degree, VCU offers an accelerated program that allows students to finish their degree in just five semesters. VCU also offers a degree completion program for registered nurses. Master's degrees include the traditional Master of Science, a direct-entry program and an accelerated M.S.N. The school offers several areas of concentration within the program: adult care, child health, clinical health nursing, women's health, clinical nurse leadership, nurse education, family health and psychiatric mental health. VCU also offers a Ph.D. in nursing.

The School of Nursing at Old Dominion University (ODU) also offers potential students multiple avenues of study. At the bachelor's degree level, ODU offers both the traditional B.S.N. program and a degree completion program for registered nurses. One of the hallmarks of the ODU program is the fact that it provides students with opportunities to pursue much of their nursing education through distance education. At the master's degree level, ODU offers the traditional M.S.N. degree with several areas of concentration: nursing education, clinical nurse leader, family practitioner, nurse anesthesia, nurse midwifery and women's health practitioner.
