ER Nursing Schools

Emergency room (ER) nurses, or trauma nurses, evaluate patients and assist physicians with surgery and other procedures in an emergency care setting. ER nurses are licensed registered nurses (RN) at the associate's or bachelor's degree level who complete specialized training in emergency care by completing a certificate program. They also complete internships with emergency room settings at local hospitals.

    • The University of California (UC) in San Diego is ranked as the second-best university in the nation by the Washington Monthly's 2009 College Guide. The UC San Diego Medical Center was ranked as one of the best hospitals in the nation within six speciality areas by U.S. News & World Report in 2009. The UC San Diego Extended Studies division offers 120 professional education certificate programs with over 600 courses. The Emergency Department Nursing Certificate is offered online every semester and is completed in three courses. The first course focuses on assessment of emergency care patients. The second course centers on frequently found emergency department topics such as substance abuse and pediatric emergencies. The last course provides hands-on training to students with an Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certificate, teaching splinting and the usage of auto-transfusion equipment.

    Vanderbilt University

    • Located in Nashville, Tennessee, Vanderbilt University is the second-largest private employer in the state. It was ranked within the top twenty best research-oriented medical schools, hospitals and nursing schools in the country by U.S News and World Report, as of 2010. The Emergency Nurse Practitioner program is a dual degree program as a family nurse practitioner and acute care nurse practitioner with an emergency care focus. The university is one of the first in the country to offer this type of program. It is available to RNs with at least two years of clinical experience and prepares them for careers in clinical settings within adult internal medicine, pediatric offices and main emergency departments.

    Adelphi University

    • Adelphi University in Garden City, NY was named as one of the best liberal arts colleges in the Northeast region of the country by Princeton Review in 2010. It has produced famous alumni such as Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jonathan Larson and Olympic gold medalist Bob Beamon. Adelphi University School of Nursing offers the M.S. (master of science) degree and a post-master's degree in emergency nursing and disaster management. The M.S. degree may be completed on a part-time or full-time basis and prepares students for management careers in emergency departments. The certificate program is designed for students with a master's degree in nursing to obtain jobs within the emergency department.
