The first historically black college or university (HBCU) in the United States to have an Associate degree Nursing Program, Norfolk State University has since expanded to provide a Bachelors of Science degree in nursing. Since its inception, more than 2,000 students have become registered nurses. Both degrees are fully accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, Inc. and the Virginia Board of Nursing. The university offers majors, concentrations and certificates in communication sciences disorders, food science and nutrition, health services management, and medical technology.
The School of Nursing at Old Dominion University offers a Bachelors of Science and Masters of Science in Nursing. The university features state-of-the-art equipment, educational models, fundamentals and health-assessments laboratories, and mediated classrooms, all of which the university explains, enhance the learning experience of nursing majors. With both pre-licensure and post-licensure programs available, Old Dominion University provides flexible options to choose from to complete your education. Pre-licensed students can choose from the traditional three-year academic schedule or two-year calendar . Post-licensed students can choose to attend courses via television as well as online.
Available for high school students as well as adults, the Norfolk Technical Vocational Center provides an 18-month Practical Nursing course. Course topics include nutrition, growth and development, body structure and function, vocational relationships, drug therapy and nursing fundamentals. The course also provides limited clinical practice. Students must incur the costs of a health screening, appropriate immunizations, health insurance and a student uniform.
At Tidewater Community College, it takes only five semesters of full-time study to receive an Associate degree in Applied Science in Nursing. Accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing, completion of the nursing program leads to many employment opportunities including long-term care and home health services, and work in mental health facilities, rehabilitation centers, doctors offices and health departments. The college also features an articulated Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) program to assist those with work experience to quickly move into the associate degree program.
