LPN Nursing Colleges in Southern Louisiana

The Southern portion of Louisiana is home to several colleges offering LPN programs. These programs train entry-level nurses to provide care to patients in nursing homes, hospitals, private settings and doctor's offices. Candidates complete a one- to two-year program and work under physicians and/or registered nurses to fulfill their duties. LPN programs prepare candidates to take the state test for licensure.
  1. Delgado Community College

    • Charity School of Nursing at Delgado Community College is located in New Orleans, Louisiana. This school has an LPN program that offers enrollment twice each year and covers 16 months of course work. Candidates are prepared for general nursing work with training consisting of instruction in bathing, feeding, giving medicines and charting. Interested candidates need a high school diploma or GED, a completed TEAS (Test of the Essential Academic Skills) exam with a score of 70 or higher, a GPA (grade point average) of 2.0 on all college prerequisite work and be in good health. Prospective students must also have a criminal background check and submit to a drug test before being considered for the Practical Nurse program. Students must complete 59 nursing semester hours in the program and maintain an 80 or higher on all coursework to graduate. Upon successful completion, students are eligible to take the state nursing test to obtain their license.

    Delta College of Arts & Technology

    • Delta College of Arts & Technology, located in Baton Rouge, offers an LPN program that candidates finish over a 15-month period for day classes and a 24-month period for night classes. Training is geared toward preventing diseases, promoting healthy lifestyles and assisting patients with coping during illnesses. Interested candidates must have an interview to be considered for admission. Students have three days to withdraw from courses without a penalty and upon completion, candidates are prepared to sit for the Louisiana Practical Nurses exam.

    Louisiana Technical College

    • Louisiana Technical College at Baton Rouge has an accredited LPN program. To be considered for admission, candidates must first be accepted to the college and satisfactorily pass the COMPASS exam with at least a 44 in math, an 82 in reading and a 60 in language. The ASSET exam can also be taken and minimum requirements are a 41 in math, a 42 in reading and a 42 in language. Candidates receive classroom study, laboratory practice and clinical training in nursing homes, doctor's offices and hospitals. A passing grade of 80 percent must be achieved on all LPN coursework to graduate. Students must take 58 dedicated hours of nursing classes in addition to prerequisite work. Upon completion of this program, students are eligible to take the nursing board exams for Practical Nurses.
