Louisiana Junior Colleges

Although they were established relatively late compared with those in other states, Louisiana does have a handful of junior colleges that have become well-established. These colleges offer associate degrees and certificates for trades. They also provide a chance to obtain transferable credits to a four-year school at affordable prices.
  1. Baton Rouge Community College

    • Baton Rouge Community College, which first opened in 1995, moved to its current location in the the heart of Baton Rouge in 1998. Its 60-acre campus has six main buildings, and the school's total enrollment is approximately 7,000 students. In addition to courses that can later be transferred to four-year colleges, it has community education and service programs. Students receive a two-year associate degree upon graduation. Its athletic teams compete on the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I level in baseball along with men's and women's basketball. Baton Rouge Community College has more than 100 full-time instructors, a 15-member library staff and over 200 adjunct faculty members. Its Magnolia Library contains more than 30,000 books.

    Louisiana Delta Community College

    • Louisiana Delta Community College in Monroe, in the northern part of the state, opened in 2001 and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate degrees in 2009. It offers two-year-programs, certificates and independent courses for non-full-time students. Programs that carry associate degrees include business and technology, child care, respiratory therapy, nursing, teaching and general studies. A variety of online courses are also available at a college with satellite courses in Tallulah and Lake Providence. In addition to its academic curriculum, courses are available in trade fields such as welding and automotive repair.

    Bossier Parish Community College

    • Bossier Parish Community College in Bossier City has an enrollment of approximately 6,500 students and four classroom buildings with labs and wireless Internet service. The school awards associate degrees and certificate/technical diplomas in various trades. In addition to its classrooms, the campus has a student center, a performing arts theater and a sports complex. The school competes in baseball, basketball and softball in the National Junior College Association. Founded in 1973, the school's departments include behavioral and social sciences, business, educational technology, liberal arts, innovative learning, mathematics, science and health and telecommuniciations.

    Nunez Community College

    • Nunez Community College in the town of Chalmette was accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1993 to award associate degrees and certificates. Its numerous programs include practical nursing, elementary school teaching, business technology, culinary arts, electric construction, industrial maintenance, medical coding and billing, and paralegal studies. Intramural sports are available if enough students express an interest. Financial aid is available to students who qualify.
