Small Nursing Colleges

While it can be advantageous at times to pursue studies in nursing at a large university, it can be equally advantageous to attend school at a smaller institution. This can be true of nursing schools as well. Smaller schools offer students the advantages of having greater access to faculty members, smaller classes, a smaller faculty to student ratio and a greater sense of community among nursing students.
  1. Mount St. Mary's College

    • Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles, although located on two campuses, is a relatively small private Catholic Christian college that offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in the field of nursing. The college, as a whole, enrolls just under 2,500 students each year. The college is primarily a women's college; the music and nursing programs admit male students. The nursing program offers an associate and bachelor's degree at the undergraduate level. Bachelor's degree programs are offered as either traditional or accelerated programs or, in some cases, to registered associate degree nurses that need to complete the bachelor's degree. Students can also pursue the master of science in nursing degree at the graduate level.

    Saint Anthony College of Nursing

    • The Saint Anthony College of Nursing (SACN) in Rockford, Ill., is also a small private Catholic college. With less than 200 undergraduate nursing students enrolled in its programs, SACN is truly one of the smaller colleges of nursing that you could attend. With a student to faculty ratio of just 8-to-1, students have ample access to faculty members and small classes to attend in most cases. At the undergraduate level, SACN offers both the traditional bachelor of science in nursing (B.S.N.) program as well as a degree completion program for registered nurses. At the graduate level, SACN offers the master of science (M.S.N.) with three different areas of possible specialization: nursing education, clinical nursing and clinical nursing leadership.
