Small Four-Year Colleges

When deciding on what college to attend, you may be weighing the options between attending a large university or a small four-year college.The perks of attending a small college can include smaller class sizes, a smaller student-to-teacher ratio and easier access to campus. Small accredited four-year colleges, like their larger counterparts, are located all over the United States. The website CampusExplorer.com includes hundreds of them in its 8,000-school database. (See Reference 1.) It also provides numerous other college search filters and other useful free information. Some examples of these small four-year schools, located in various states and offering a variety of programs, are described below.
  1. Academy College

    • Academy College in Bloomington, Minn., is a small private four-year college with an enrollment of under 300 undergraduate students. Academy College offers a variety of bachelor's and associate degrees on campus and online in the medical and health, business, finance, computer technology, digital arts and design, and aviation fields. Graduates of Academy College are aided in finding entry-level positions in their field of choice by career placement assistance offered through the college. On-campus housing is not offered at this college.

    Bay State College

    • Bay State College, located in Boston, Mass., is a small, private, four-year college with an undergraduate enrollment of under 800. Bay State offers several bachelor's and associate degree programs including criminal justice, education, marketing and nursing. Students can choose to attend classes on campus or online, and schedules are flexible to meet their needs. On-campus housing is available for out-of-state or international students.

    Catawba College

    • Catawba College, in Salisbury, N.C., is a four-year coeducational liberal arts college, that was ranked #16 by "U.S. News and World Report" in the category "Best Baccalaureate Colleges in the South" in 2007. With an average undergraduate enrollment of under 1,300, this small college offers bachelor's and associate degrees in a variety of programs including biology, business administration, history and theatre. Flexible day and evening schedules are available and on-campus housing is offered.

    Erskine College and Seminary

    • Erskine College and Seminary is a small, four-year, private Presbyterian-based liberal arts college located in Due West, S.C. With an average enrollment of around 500 students, Erskine offers a variety of bachelor's and associate degrees including history, religious studies, biology and education. On-campus housing is available to students, along with a variety of social groups and athletics opportunities.
