Ultrasound Technician Schools in New Jersey

In New Jersey, a number of schools offer programs in diagnostic medical sonography, a field the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts will grow by 18 percent from 2008 through 2018. Approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, these programs prepare students for future careers through a combination of classroom-based coursework and hands-on clinical experience in hospitals, outpatient clinics and other settings.

    • Located in Plainfield, Muhlenberg Harold B. and Dorothy A. Snyder Schools is a private medical training college. The school offers a 28-month program in diagnostic medical sonography. Students study topics like abdominal, female pelvic, obstetrical or superficial structures. During the course of the program, students complete five clinical rotations that last from 12 to 15 weeks. The school participates in state and federal financial aid and also offers a limited number of scholarships.

    Gloucester County College

    • Founded in 1965, Gloucester County College is a public institution in Sewell. The school has around 6,100 students, approximately 54 percent of which are full-time, according to the college's website. The school's Associate of Applied Science degree requires 24 months of full-time study to complete. Starting in the summer between the first and second year of the program, students complete one clinical practicum per semester. The ultrasound curriculum includes courses in physics, English composition, obstetrics and gynecology, vascular sonography, echocardiography and psychology. Cooperative education, financial aid and career placement assistance are offered for all students.

    • The largest community college in New Jersey, Bergen Community College is home to approximately 25,000 students. To qualify for the college's diagnostic medical sonography program, students must have previously taken physics, algebra and biology in high school or at the college level. Students are admitted to the 24-month program only once per year. During the course of the program, students complete clinical rotations in abdominal, obstetric and gynecological, echocardiography and vascular sonography. Career and personal counseling are available as well as job placement assistance, cooperative programs and service learning opportunities.

    University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey--North

    • Established 1970, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey--North is a public, four-year university. The school is home to around 420 students. The university requires all applicants to its diagnostic sonography programs to have previously taken classes in anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, college algebra or statistics, physics and English. Students can choose to pursue either a certificate or bachelor's degree in the field. The full bachelor's program involves one year of clinical training. Financial aid is available for qualified students.
