Electrician Schools in New Jersey

Electricians install, maintain and repair electrical systems in residential, commercial and industrial settings. An increase in electrician positions of 12 percent is expected between the years 2008 and 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The same government agency estimates average hourly wages at $22.32 as of May 2008. New Jersey students seeking education in the trade have a variety of options including public and private trade schools.
  1. Technical Institute of Camden County

    • The Technical Institute of Camden County provides a number of programs for electrician training. The Electrical Technology Program is for entry-level students with no experience as electricians. The course covers basic to advanced electrical technology, including the fundamentals of wiring, motors and transformers. The course also educates students in the National Electrical Code. Classes meet in the morning and afternoons.

      The Electrical Industrial Program prepares students to take the New Jersey State Licensing Exam for electricians. Students entering this program should have a journeyman-level mastery of electrical technology. Students also learn the basics of the electrical contracting business. Classes take place in the evenings.

      Two other specializations exist at the Technical Institute of Camden County. The Residential Program is an entry-level course that covers the basics of wiring and electrical theory. The Commercial Program is for journeyman-level electricians seeking to expand into commercial wiring. Both courses take place in the evenings.

    Pennco Tech

    • Pennco Tech offers electrician training at its Blackwood, New Jersey, campus. The program trains students in general industrial, commercial and residential wiring. More specialized training includes transformer installation, motor control circuits and wire servicing. Students will also learn audio-visual and telecommunications wiring. Graduates of the program will be prepared for entry-level employment in the field, including such areas as new construction and restoration projects.

      The career services department of Pennco helps students with their job search through education in both getting and keeping jobs. The college maintains relationships with local employers and notifies students of appropriate job openings in their field.

    Everest Institute

    • Everest Institute is a multi-campus career training facility with a campus in South Plainfield, New Jersey. This campus offers training for electricians. Training at Everest Institute includes basic electrical theory, the National Electrical Code, power distribution, commercial wiring, industrial controls and computer-based controls.

      In addition to training students in commercial, residential and industrial technologies, Everest also gives students the communication skills they need to succeed in this field. Graduates will be able to pursue entry-level employment as electricians.
