Dental Schools in Delaware

According to the American Dental Association, there are no accredited dental schools within the state of Delaware, but you'll find several programs within a one- to two-hour commute of any major city in Delaware. Schools in neighboring states such as Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Washington, D.C.and Maryland have top universities with dental programs.
  1. Philadelphia

    • Philadelphia is close to major cities in Delaware, such as Wilmington and Dover. Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania are both located in Philadelphia, and both have dental schools. The University of Pennsylvania not only offers a DMD program, but also eight areas of specialization within the dental field. The Kornberg School of Dentistry at Temple University boasts a program that teaches students clinical excellence. Both schools require Dental Admissions Test scores and an application.

    New Jersey

    • Though New Jersey is a farther drive, averaging an hour and a half to two hours from major cities in Delaware, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey offers a dental program. The school is located in Newark, New Jersey. Students are selected based on Dental Admission Test scores, interview results, extracurricular activities and motivational qualities. You can apply online to the dental school through the university's website.

    Maryland

    • The University of Maryland in Baltimore offers a Doctor of Dental Surgery program on campus. The program includes clinical, behavioral and biomedical training courses to give students the full scope of the dental practice. The University of Maryland Dental School requires an application, prerequisites, Dental Admission Test scores and residency. Patient care begins within the first year of study, so that students can get more hands-on experience, including emergency scenarios, medically compromised patients and physically and mentally disabled patients.

    Washington, D.C.

    • Howard University in Washington, D.C. offers general, clinical dentistry programs, but this university also specializes in other areas of dental work. The school of dentistry includes departments in Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Preventative and Restorative Services, Diagnostics, Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry. Post-baccalaureate and postgraduate programs are offered for new or established dentists to go on to an area of specialization or simply enhance their credentials. All courses and departments are taught and managed by certified dentists.
