Dental Hygenist Schools in Louisiana

The Louisiana Workforce Commission estimates that the demand for dental hygienists in the state will increase by 42 percent from 2006 through 2016. A small number of colleges in Louisiana offer programs in dental hygiene. Carrying the approval of the American Dental Association (ADA), these schools enable graduates to qualify for the ADA licensing examination in the field, which is necessary to become a hygienist in Louisiana.

    • Southern University at Shreveport is a two-year public institution. The college's dental hygiene degree program requires two years of full-time study and culminates in an Associate of Applied Science program. To enroll in the program, students must complete prerequisite course work in biology, chemistry and mathematics. Those accepted to the program must also obtain CPR certification and pass a criminal background check prior to the start of classes. Required courses for the program include anatomy, radiology, periodontics, community health, psychology, sociology, anesthesia and ethics. Four clinical rotations are required for graduation. In addition to federal and state financial aid programs, the college offers a limited number of institutional scholarships.

    Louisiana State University School of Dentistry

    • Located in New Orleans, the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry is a public institution that has offered dental programs since 1869. Approximately 75 percent of dentists and hygienists working within the state of Louisiana received their education from the university, according to the college's website as of May 2010. The program requires only a high school diploma or GED and the submission of ACT college admission test scores to receive admission consideration. Students must also complete two years of college-level course work in general education courses like chemistry, biology, sociology, speech and computer science at an accredited community or junior college. Once admitted, students study radiology, infectious disease control, microbiology, histology, pain control and radiography, and complete four clinical rotations over the two-year curriculum plan. Eligible students can benefit from federal and state loans and grants, veteran's benefits and emergency institutional loans and scholarships.

    University of Louisiana at Monroe

    • Founded in 1931, the University of Louisiana at Monroe is a public institution 90 miles from Shreveport. The college is home to more than 8,700 undergraduate and graduate students and grants a Bachelor of Science in dental hygiene. Students complete all four years of the program at the university, spending the first two years completing preprofessional courses in chemistry, biology, sociology, psychology, humanities, family and consumer science and communications. Once admitted to the professional phase of the program, students participate in four clinical rotations at the university's dental hygiene clinic and take courses in public health and nursing as well as those directly related to the major. The University of Louisiana also offers a baccalaureate, online degree completion program for licensed dental hygienists who possess only an associate degree in the field. In addition to government financial aid programs, the college offers work-study placements and scholarships.
