The University of Louisiana at Monroe offers master's degrees in pharmacology and gerontology. The school was known as Northeast Louisiana University until 1999. The dental hygiene course that this university features instructs students how to review a patient's medical history in precise detail, the proper way to examine a patient's head, neck and oral tissue for diseases and how to perform blood pressures exams. All students who take the dental hygiene class are also taught the proper way to remove deposits from a patient's gums, how to expose, process and interpret x-ray photos from a patient examination and the proper way to administer anesthesia.

Opened to the public in September of 1967, the Southern University of Shreveport is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It offers courses in business, humanities, natural sciences and medicine. The dental hygiene program offered by the Southern University of Shreveport hands out an Associate of Applied Science degree to all students that complete this intensive course. This dental program instructs its students on the proper way to clean a patient's molars and how to fill a patient's cavities using the latest modern techniques and equipment while training in the classroom environment. Students will also be trained on how to assist the dentist in performing dental cleaning techniques and minor orthodontic surgeries.
