List of Louisiana Colleges

Louisiana has a variety of colleges throughout the state, whether you are a recent graduate of high school, enhancing your current skill sets or underemployed. Louisiana is home to some of the top universities across the United States, plenty of technical institutions, and state schools. You have a choice of private, public, two-year or four-year colleges, with diverse concentrations, including cosmetology, law, medicine and engineering.
  1. Baton Rouge

    • Baton Rouge sits alongside the Mississippi River toward the southern end of the state. It offers state colleges, community colleges and technical schools. The Baton Rouge Community College is a two-year public community college that offers certificates and associate's degrees in liberal arts, social science and engineering. The Louisiana Culinary Institute is a two-year private school that trains students in food services, including cooking techniques, nutrition and business operations. The Southern University Law Center is a four-year special-focus institution that awards law degrees. In addition, Louisiana State University (LSU) is a public four-year state school that offers a host of concentrations, including veterinary medicine, law and engineering.

    New Orleans

    • New Orleans is the largest city in Louisiana, near the mouth of the Mississippi River. The city features some of the best colleges in the nation, including private and community colleges. Xavier University of Louisiana ranks number 22 on the "2011 Best Colleges Edition" list for South Regional Universities compiled by U.S. News and World Report. The historically Black institution is a private Catholic university that dates back to 1915 when it was a high school formed by Saint Katharine Drexel of Philadelphia and the Sisters of Blessed Sacrament. The university includes the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Pharmacy and Graduate Programs. The three main criteria evaluated by Admission for entering Freshmen students include a high transcript, a high school counselor's recommendation and SAT or ACT scores.

      Delgado Community College is the oldest and biggest two-year public community college in New Orleans. The community college offers nine different locations, including the City Park Campus, West Bank Campus, Sidney Collier Site and Charity School of Nursing. The college features several divisions, including Allied Heath, Arts and Humanities, Communication, Business and Technology and Science and Mathematics.

      Loyola University New Orleans ranks no. 7 on the 2011 Edition of Best Colleges in Regional Universities (South). It is 20 minutes from the French Quarter. The university offers 11 graduate and 61 undergraduate programs. Some concentrations include marketing, accounting, education, law and creative writing.

    Lake Charles

    • Lake Charles offers trade, specialty and state schools. The Delta School of Business and Technology (Delta Tech) is a two-year private school with an undergraduate student population of 345 and a 12-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio as of January 2011 that awards certificates and associate degrees. McNeese State University is a state four-year school that offers associate's, bachelor's, certificates and post-master's certificates. Sowela Technical Community College is a public two-year school that features, daytime, weekend, online and evening courses and awards certificates and associate degrees.

    Shreveport

    • Shreveport is a frequent place to try your luck on the slot machines and table games. It is also home to state colleges and private educational institutions. Louisiana State University at Shreveport (LSUS) is a four-year public college that awards bachelor degrees, master degrees and post-master certificates. The school is a branch of the Louisiana State University System that offers multiple campuses and higher education throughout Louisiana. LSUS serves the Shreveport-Bossier area. It offers small class sizes with 19 students to one teacher in most classes and 80 percent of the faculty have doctoral degrees.

    Other Cities

    • Other cities in Louisiana that are home to major colleges include Natchitoches and Monroe. Northwestern State University of Louisiana ranks no. 83 in the 2011 edition of Best Colleges for Regional Universities in the South listed by the U.S. News and World Report. The school sits in Natchitoches along the Red River and awards, post baccalaureate certificates, master degrees, associate degrees and bachelor degrees in various concentrations, including journalism, accounting, education and engineering.

      The University of Louisiana Monroe is a four-year public institution in Monroe in the northern region of Louisiana. It offers graduate studies, pharmacy, education and business programs. In addition, you can earn an online certificates and degrees with the school. The university typically has classes with 17-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio.
