How to Cite an Interview in an Essay

Citations in a research paper tell readers where you found your resources and give credit to the original writer. Interviews are a form of personal communication research and can be valuable to an essay. Interviewing sources provides you with firsthand accounts and insight into an event or research topic. Many interviews may also point you to further research options. Because an interview is personal communication, it has a distinctive way to be cited in both MLA citation (developed by the Modern Language Association) and APA citation (created by the American Psychological Association) formats.

Instructions

    • 1

Include the name of the interviewee and the date interviewed for APA style in-text citations. You should also note that it was a personal communication. For example: (Z. Levi, personal communication, July 23, 2011). Don't cite interviews on a reference list for APA style.

    • 2

Cite MLA interviews in-text with the last name of the person interviewed in parentheses. For example: (Gomez).

    • 3

Cite the interview in an MLA citation with the name of the person interviewed, the phrase "personal interview" and the interview date. For example: McAvoy, James. Personal interview. 19 April 2011.

    • 4

Cite published interviews in MLA style with the interviewee's name, the name of the interview, the title of the work the interview appeared in (if applicable), the author of the article and publication information. For example: Hamilton, Kate. Interview with Michael Fassbender. Empire Magazine. By Jane Smith. Boston, MA: 23-27, 2009. Print.
