How Do I Cite an Essay I Wrote?

If you use an essay that you previously wrote as a source for your term paper, you may wish to cite it. If it has been published, simply cite it according to the basic rules for citing a newspaper article, journal article, or whatever format it was published in. If it is an unpublished essay, however, you must cite it in a specific manner. Both the Modern Language Association (MLA) and American Psychological Association (APA) publish guidelines for the correct citation of unpublished work.
