How to Place Personal Communication Sources in APA Format

Most professors in college force students to cite the facts that they use in their papers in order to check the accuracy of their interpretations. One commonly-used style for these citations is APA format, which is published by the American Psychological Association. Personal communications must be cited in the text with APA format. Examples of personal communications include phone and in-person interviews, emails and letters.

Instructions

    • 1

Review your notes to determine the name of the person and the date you had the conversation.

    • 2

Use parenthetical references in the body of the paper using the following format:
      (Name, personal communication, date).
For example, a citation might look like this:
(Geoff Hastings, personal communication, October 12, 2009).

    • 3

Leave the name out of the citation if you state the name in the sentence. For example, "According to Hastings, curling is not a sport (personal communication, October 12, 2009)."

    • 4

Do not cite the personal communications in your "Works Cited" list. APA format only has you cite the personal communications in the body of your paper.
