How to Do APA Format for a Chat Session

Chat sessions fall under the category of personal communications in APA style. Like e-mails and online forum discussions, such sessions merit in-text citations. However, APA style does not recommend including the chat session citation in the "Works Cited" references list with other references such as books, periodicals or Web pages. The in-text reference does not detail what kind of personal communication you had with the source, only that it was a personal communication. Thus, readers will not know that the correspondence was in the form of a chat session.

Instructions

    • 1

Record the name of the person you chatted with and the date of the chat session.

    • 2

Begin the citation after you mention your correspondence in the text of your paper.

    • 3

Format the citation as follows: Begin with the name of the person you chatted with, followed by the words "personal communication" and the date you chatted. Place the citation in parentheses. For example: "(James Bond, personal communication, May 20, 2010)."
