How to Do an APA Citing of a Story Within a Book

Academic writing in American Psychological Association (APA) style requires meticulously documenting all your sources and ensuring that authors get proper credit for their work. Though some of the citation elements remain the same, citing a story published within a book requires information beyond what you would include for citing only the book. Make sure to credit both the story's author and the book's editor and also give information on where to find the story.

Instructions

    • 1

Cite the name of the author of the story. List the last name, then the first and middle initials; for example, "Smith, A. J." Omit the middle initial if a middle name or initial is not given in the book.

    • 2

State the year of publication for the book in parentheses. For example, "(2010)."

    • 3

List the title of the story. Capitalize only the first word, proper nouns and any word after a colon; for example, "Little Red Riding Hood: The wolf's revenge."

    • 4

Give the editor's name and role, the title of the book and the page numbers of the story. Include all this information in one sentence; for example, "In B. Jones (Ed.), A collection of modern fairy tales (pp. 15-23)." Italicize the book title.

    • 5

End with the publisher's location and name. Separate the location and name with a colon and include both city and state in the location. For example, "New York, NY: Far Away Publishing."
