How to Do APA Citations

The American Psychological Association (APA) specifies how to properly document sources in the form of citations. Citations must be used when referring to works of others in any body of written material, such as an essay or research paper. Follow the correct formatting to properly indicate when someone else's work is being referenced.

Instructions

  1. In-Text Citations

    • 1
Cite with the author's last name and the year of publication.

Cite in APA style by including the author's last name and the year of publication, and placing them both within parentheses. For example, (Smith, 2002). Capitalize the author's last name, and place a comma between the name and the year. This citation should correspond with to the matching reference on the reference list of your paper.

    • 2
Include the page number for direct quotes.

Introduce the author within the sentence to use a slightly different citation specified by APA style. This consists of placing the author's last name within the sentence followed only by the year of publication. For example, "Smith (2002) states that..." When directly quoting material from another source include the author, year of publication and the page number the quote was taken from, all within parentheses. For example, (Smith, 2002, p.28). Insert "p." to indicate the page number.

    • 3
Use both authors' names within a citation

Name both authors when the source being cited contains two authors. For example, (Jones & Black, 2006). Place an ampersand between the two last names. If the cited source does not have an author, use the first few words of its title.
