How to Use Titles of Books in APA

APA format was developed by the American Psychological Association as a way to cite research used in papers or academic journal articles. APA style is traditionally used in papers within the social sciences, but professors and journals in other fields may prefer you to use this style of formatting as well. Citing books is one of the easiest citations because you only need a few pieces of information, most of which is readily available in the book. There are a few specific rules to follow for book titles in APA style.

Instructions

    • 1

Put book titles in italics whenever referenced to adhere to APA standards. You can also underline a book title but italics are preferred.

    • 2

Do not use titles of books for in-text citations when using APA format. In-text citations use the author and publication year in parentheses, for example (Smith, 2003) and don't include a book title.

    • 3

Cite book titles alphabetically by author in your reference list (also called a works cited page). Because the author's name is listed first in an APA citation, you list authors alphabetically, not the book titles. Always include the full title of the book in italics and include the edition if applicable.

    • 4

Capitalize only the first letter of the first word of the book title. For example if the book is "Pride and Prejudice" you would write it as Pride and prejudice.
