How to Use Picture Books to Teach Character

If you are interested in developing your children's moral character, you can do this by reading picture books to them that promote character building and by using a variety of techniques. When deciding on picture books, you want to get books that are easy for the children to understand and which promote certain morals you are trying to instill in them. You can also incorporate diversity into your lessons by using books with multicultural characters.

Instructions

    • 1

Create your own story based on the book. If the book contains mostly pictures of older children looking after siblings who suffer from severe illnesses, give the people in the book names and get a child in the audience to portray the younger sibling while you play the part of the older child. At the end of the story, discuss the importance of siblings looking out for each other's well-being during tough times.

    • 2

Have each child read a certain section of the picture book. Afterwards, ask each person to give an opinion on what the characters in the picture book are trying to teach the readers. If one child read about a boy who returned money that he stole, ask the child what he learned about being honest with others when he does things that are wrong.

    • 3

Create a trivia game based on the picture book. For example, if you read a picture book that was centered on characters who shared what they had with those who were less fortunate, write down four age-appropriate questions about that scenario for children to answer. The winners who answer all four questions correctly get a prize, such as a bag of candy and a puzzle book.
