How to Cite MLS Book Titles

Writing in MLS style allows you to present your research--in the body of your paper, as a footnote, endnote or in a bibliography--to help support your thesis. MLS is the style developed by the Modern Language Association and is used by many colleges. It is also known as MLA style. Not knowing how to cite MLS book titles in a paper could cost you significant grade points.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down the following information from each book you use for your research: author(s), title, publisher, city and state of the publisher and year published.

    • 2

Write down the page number in the book for any material that you plan on referencing later in the body of your paper. Label your notes from the books with the title and the page number referenced so you can easily match your notes to the cards you created.

    • 3

Include the proper parenthetical citation within the body of your paper when you reference material. For example, at the end of a paragraph that is drawn from a resource written by an author named Bine, use the citation "(Bine 42)". There is no punctuation between the name and the number; if you have two authors, like Bine and Trine, the citation would read "(Bine and Trine 42)".

    • 4

Use footnotes or an endnote for longer passages that reference a book. Place the appropriate number next to the section of the passage cite it in your footnote or endnote as "John Bine, I Wrote a Book (Allentown, New York: Triplepage, 2008) 42.".

    • 5

Cite all books you used in your research in the bibliography, whether they were directly referenced in the paper or not. Book citations are formatted as "Author last name, Author first name. Book title, City published: Publisher, year published.". So the book from Step 4 would be cited as "Bine, John. I Wrote a Book. Allentown, New York: Triplepage, 2008.". Make sure the punctuation is matched correctly, including the period after the date. For books with more then one author, only the first is listed with his last name first (Bine, John and Susan Trine).
