How to Use APA Formatting

The American Psychological Association (APA) developed a set of documentation rules in 1929. These rules are referred to as APA Style and they aid with reading comprehension of submitted documentation. When using the APA Style, refer to the formatting guidelines for your document. The APA guidelines cover the document areas including the margins, font, spacing, alignment, indentation, pagination, voice, header and order of pages.

Instructions

    • 1

Adjust all of the margins of the document to approximately one inch. This includes the top, bottom, left and right margins of your document.

Change the body font to a serif font such as "Times New Roman" and adjust the font size to 12 points.

    • 2

Keep consistent double spaced lines throughout the entire document. Apply this formatting to the title page, document body, abstract, references and appendices.

Use one space once after commas, colons and semicolons. Use two spaces after your sentence ends and a new sentence begins.

    • 3

Apply five to seven spaces to your paragraph indentation. Apply the page numbers in the upper right corner of your paper, which should appear at the right one-inch border. Include a left-aligned header at the top of each page.

    • 4

Write in an active voice. For example, write "The college is providing guidelines" instead of the "The guidelines were provided by the college."

    • 5

Arrange the papers in your document in the following order: Title Page, Abstract, Body, References, Footnotes, Tables, Figures and Appendices.
