Type in the stated order, in parenthesis, at the end of the quote, the author's last name, year of publication and page number. The page number format is p. ###. Include elements in parenthesis that are not included in the sentence. It is not essential to include a page number when paraphrasing. For example:
Quote 1: According to Maya Angelou, "Home is the youthful region where a child is the only real inhabitant" (2008, p. 6).
Quote 2: "Home is the youthful region where a child is the only real inhabitant" (Angelou, 2008, p. 6).
Paraphrase: Maya Angelou says a child is the only real inhabitant where home is a youthful region (2008).
Type both authors' last names separated by the word and if they are included in the text when there are two authors. Separate the author's names with an ampersand (&) if the names are included in parenthesis at the end of the text. For example:
Quote 1: According to Wilson and Mullenweg, "There can be some costs associated with running a WordPress blog" (2008, p. 10).
Quote 2: "There can be some costs associated with running a WordPress blog" (Wilson & Mullenweg, 2008, p.10).
Type the three to five authors' last names in the order they are listed in the book, year of publication and page number in parenthesis at the end of the quote for the first in-text reference. In additional in-text references, include only the first author's last name followed by comma, "et. al." For example:
First Quote: "As the technology behind BIM continues to grow, so does the potential" (Vandezande, Read, and Krygiel, 2011, p. 4).
Second Quote: "A host of things are now possible using a building information model" (Vandezande et al., 2011, p. 4)
Type the first listed author's last name followed by "et al," publication year and page number when there are six or more authors. For example:
First Quote: According to Vandezande et al., "As the technology behind BIM continues to grow, so does the potential" (2011, p. 4).
"As the technology behind BIM continues to grow, so does the potential" (Vandezande et al, 2011, p. 4).
Type the last name first, comma, first initial for a single author (Angelou, M.).
Use the format for single author separated by a comma and ampersand sign for two authors (Sabin-Wilson, L., & Mullenweg, M.).
Use the same format as for two authors for three to seven authors with the ampersand between the last two authors (Vandezande, J., Read, P., & Krygiel, E.).
Type the names of the first seven authors for books that have more than seven authors. Include ellipses (...) before the seventh author (Vandezande, J, Read, P., Krygiel, E., Morrison, T., Angelou, M., Rowling, J. K., Rowling, . . . King, S.).
Type the authors' name or names followed by a comma, the year of publication in parenthesis, followed by a period. Enter the name of the article or chapter. Only capitalize the first word. Enter the book or journal title in italics. Indent all lines except the first one by 1/2 inch to create a hanging indent. Place references in alphabetical order by last name. Center the word References at the top of the reference page.
Example of proper format in a reference entry:
Angelou, M. (2008). Home. In. A. Rampersad & D. Russell (Eds.), Letters to My Daughter (p. 6). New York, NY: Random House.
