How to Reference a Song in an MLA Paper

Writing a paper in MLA format can be tricky for someone not familiar with the style guidelines. However, most MLA guides are broken down into categories and are extremely specific. Referencing a song on your works cited page is easy when you break it down into steps and can see other examples.

Instructions

    • 1

Compile information about the song you wish to reference. You will need the method in which you listened to it (mp3, CD, etc.), the song title, album name and artist. You will also need the year it was released and the record company that produced it. Compile as much information as is available to you, but it is permissible to have some information missing.

    • 2

List the artist followed by a period. Band names are listed exactly as they perform. For example, The Blazing Monkeys would be cited exactly as it is said. Artist names are written with the last name first followed by a comma and the first name and if appropriate the middle initial. Purdue's OWL website gives this example: Ludwig van Beethoven is cited Beethoven, Ludwig van.

    • 3

List the song name in quotations followed by a period. Make sure the period falls inside the closing quotation mark.

    • 4

List the album on which the song appears. Italicize the album name, and follow it with a period.

    • 5

List the record company followed by a comma, the year the album was released and a period.

    • 6

List the format in which you used the song as a reference. For example, list whether the song is being referenced from a CD or an mp3 digital file.
