How Do I Reference a Website in a Term Paper?

When you are writing a term paper for school, your instructor will expect you to cite references to support your statements. Your paper demonstrates that you can do research and make connections to various pieces of information, which may come from books, journals and Internet websites. Because documents published on the Internet are subject to more frequent revision than printed materials, one key difference in referencing a website is to note the date you accessed it. Your instructor may ask you to use the Modern Language Association (MLA) or the American Psychological Association (APA) style of citation for your guide, or a modified version.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the name of the website when you are citing a general website and using the MLA style. Next, write the website's editor or editors if that information is available. After that, write the electronic date of publishing, the institution associated with the site, the date you accessed the site, and the URL. For example, your reference could read: Name of Website. Ed. Jane Doe. 2010. Name of Institution. Name. 15 Jun. 2010. http://sitename.domain.

Write the name of the author of a specific article you are citing from a website when using the MLA style, followed by the name of the article in quotation marks, and then the name of the website. Include the editor or editors if this information is provided, the date of electronic publication, the institution associated with the site, the date you accessed the site, and the URL. For example, you could write: Doe, John. "Title of Article." Name of Website. Ed. Jane Doe. 2010. Name of Institution. Publisher Name. 12 Jun. 2010. http://sitename.domain/articlename.

Write the name of the website in italics when citing a general website using APA style, followed by the date of electronic publication, the date you retrieved it from the website, and the URL. For example: Name of Website. 2008. Retrieved May 15, 2010, from http://sitename.domain.

Write the last name and then the initial of the first name of the author of a specific article when you are using APA style, followed by the date of electronic publishing in parentheses. Next, write the name of the article, the name of the site in italics, the date you retrieved it, and the URL. For example: Doe, J. 2007, May 1). Title of Article. Website's Name. Retrieved May 30, 2010 from http://sitename.domain/articletitle.
