How do you Reference a Website in a Paper?

When formulating research papers, or any document that requires references to support facts, it is important to give credit to the originators of those ideas, whether you've taken the information from a print publication or the Internet. The Modern Language Association sets the standards for most academic writing, and it has standards for citing online references. This standard is similar to citing printed works. In-text citations do not include the full web address, which is why it is important that the writer include the full web address in the works cited page.

Instructions

    • 1

Pinpoint the exact name of the reference. Use the author's name rather than the website if quoting an online article. Cite the website if there is no author noted.

    • 2

Write the author's name or the website when citing a reference for paraphrased statements. Write: According to Dr. Harvey Long ...; or According to the website African Elephant Example ... . Writers may enter the name of the website (or author) after the sentence in parentheses. Write: Poachers have increasingly targeted African elephants in Mozambique (African Elephant Example).

    • 3

Put quotations around direct quotes by the website or author. Write: "The African elephant in Mozambique is being recklessly targeted by poachers," states Long; or "The African elephant in Mozambique is being recklessly targeted by poachers," (African Elephant Example).
