Historical Black Basketball Colleges

Although academics is the most important aspect of any college, athletics can play a vital role in the success of a school. Successful athletic teams can create revenue for a school in addition to attracting new students and increasing its brand awareness. Though they may not be on the same basketball level as schools such as North Carolina, Duke and Kansas, historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) such as North Carolina A&T, Hampton University and Morgan State have made huge strides.
  1. Morgan State University

    • The Morgan State University men's basketball team made a name for itself during the 2009-10 season by winning the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title and advancing to the NCAA men's basketball tournament. Morgan State lost to the University of Oklahoma, but the exposure for the Baltimore school with an enrollment of 7,500 students was positive. Morgan State also won 23 games in 2008-09, setting a high standard for future basketball teams.

    Hampton University

    • Hampton University has advanced to the NCAA men's basketball tournament four times. Hampton has an enrollment of about 6,000 students, but the small school has built a strong basketball program. The most notable NCAA tournament appearance for the school occurred in 2001, when Hampton upset Oklahoma. Hampton's victory over the Sooners marked only the fourth time in NCAA history that a 15th-seeded team upset a No. 2 team. Hampton's women's basketball team also advanced to the NCAA basketball tournament in 2009-10 and finished the season with 20 victories.

    North Carolina A&T

    • The North Carolina A&T men's basketball team became a power during the 1980s, winning seven straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championships. Although it shares basketball in the state with Duke University and the University of North Carolina, North Carolina A&T has won nine conference championships and has advanced to the NCAA men's basketball tournament nine times. The North Carolina A&T women's basketball team won the conference regular-season championship and advanced to the 2010 Women's National Invitation Tournament, losing to the University of Miami.
