Black Colleges in New Orleans

There are a few New Orleans schools that historically identify as black colleges. If you know that you'd like to apply to a black college in this area, choose one with your academic interests and career goals in mind.
  1. Dillard University

    • Dillard University is a small, private liberal arts university with just over 2,100 students. Programs include business, educational studies, humanities, natural sciences and social sciences. It is especially recognized for its nursing program. It offers a four-year (plus) degree program and is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. One of the benefits of attending Dillard is access to a partnership with the Melton Foundation, which offers intercultural and leadership grants.

    Southern University at New Orleans

    • Schools at Southern University at New Orleans are divided into arts and sciences, business and public administration, education and human development, and social work and graduate studies. The university offers classes online and a tool called SmarterMeasure, which helps students decide whether the online classes are the right option for them. It has a unique collection of centers and programs for special study, such as the Center for African and African-American Studies, Chancellor's Emerging Leaders Program, Early Start Program, Small Business Development and Management Institute, and it's involved in the Universities Rebuilding America Partnership.

    Xaiver University of Louisiana

    • Xavier is affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church, which is reflected in the values of its academics and school life. Xavier is America's only historically black and Catholic university. Community service is an integral part of the moral education provided. The university is divided into the School of Arts and Sciences--everything from theology to psychology to art to music to biology; 18 academic departments altogether--and the College of Pharmacy, as well as graduate studies.

    Beyond New Orleans

    • There are other historically black colleges in the state of Louisiana to choose from as well, including Grambling State University in Grambling, Southern University and A&M College at Baton Rouge, and Southern University at Shreveport.
