Spelman College, a private liberal arts college, is the nation's oldest all-female historically black college. The school was founded in 1881 as the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary and it earned its collegiate charter in 1924. Spelman College belongs to the Atlanta University Center consortium of historically black institutions of higher learning, an organization which also includes nearby Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine and Clark Atlanta University. As of 2009, Spelman College had more than 2,100 students working toward Bachelor of Art (BA) and Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees. Spelman students can choose from among 26 different majors and 25 minors. Notable Spelman College alumnae include journalist Rolonda Watts and Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Alice Walker. In 2010, "U.S. News & World Report" magazine ranked Spelman College 68th among the nation's liberal arts colleges.

Morehouse College is an all-male, historically black liberal arts college that was founded in 1867. As of 2009, the college had nearly 3,000 students. Morehouse College offers 26 majors within three primary academic divisions, including business administration and economics, humanities and social sciences, and science and mathematics. Qualified students can apply to enter the college's honors program. Morehouse students have the opportunity to participate in a domestic exchange program and spend a semester at another college or university, such as Dartmouth College, Davidson College, New York University or Stanford University. Notable Morehouse College alumni include Martin Luther King Jr., Spike Lee and Samuel L. Jackson.

Clark Atlanta University is a private, historically black university that was founded in 1988 when Clark College and Atlanta University merged. Both Clark College and Atlanta University were founded in the nineteenth century. Clark Atlanta University remains affiliated with the United Methodist Church. As of 2009, the university had about 3,300 undergraduates and 700 graduate students. The university contains four schools, including the schools of arts and sciences, business administration, education and social work. Together these schools offer 38 programs of study leading toward bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees.

Paine College is a private, historically black liberal arts college that was founded in 1882. The school remains affiliated with the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and the United Methodist Church. As of 2009, Paine College had about 900 students working toward Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees.
