Hastings, Minnesota, is about 18 miles southeast of St. Paul, the state's capital. This city of 18,000 people doesn't have any colleges right in town, but there are many to choose from in nearby St. Paul. This area of the United States appeals to many students --- St. Paul's motto is the most livable city in America. Students can live in Hastings and easily commute to St. Paul for college, where they'll also find museums, restaurants and bars.

    • Saint Paul College, located at 325 Marshall Ave. in St. Paul, has been open since 1910 and as of 2009, had an enrollment of about 16,000. This is a community and technical college recognized as one of the top 50 fastest-growing public two-year colleges in the United States. This college offers transferrable credits that would work for a four-year degree as well as full-time associate degrees.

    Macalester College

    • Macalester College is a private liberal arts college in St. Paul, with an enrollment of nearly 2,000. More than 10 percent of students are international and the college has 165 full time faculty members. The college has 31 academic departments offering 36 majors. The average class size is 17.5 and the most popular majors, among 2010 graduates, was economics, political science, biology, psychology and international studies. The majority of students take advantage of intramural sports and the college, a NCAA Division III college, offers some varsity sports as well.

    University of St. Thomas

    • The University of St. Thomas is a small, private Catholic university in St. Paul. Founded in 1885, this liberal arts college has more than 10,000 students enrolled. The student-to-faculty ratio is 15-to-1, and the average class size for undergraduates is 21. The university offers 96 majors and 58 minors, and it has 11 men's and 11 women's varsity teams. There is also a substantial graduate program, with 48 graduate degree programs offered.

    Hamline University

    • Hamline University, located on Hewitt Avenue in St. Paul, is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and has an enrollment of 5,000. Founded in 1854, Hamline was Minnesota's first university. Both bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees are offered, and students can choose from 40 areas of study. The college has a strong study-abroad program, offering study opportunities in 40 different countries. The student-to-faculty ratio is 12-to-1, and the college has 19 Division III athletic teams.
